If you don't know yet, I am very injury prone. Whether it's another ankle injury at netball, annihilating my shoulder at hockey, or the broken toes and stress fractures I've endured in soccer, there always seems to be another injury just around the corner.
This morning I awoke and thought I would go for a particularly long run today. 11 km to my parents' house, and back again. This is the longest run I've gone on since Tough Mudder Melbourne 3 weeks ago.
The first leg wasn't too bad. As per usual, at the start of any run, I hated it (I loathe running if you hadn't realised already), but pushed through and just tuned out everything but the music in my headphones. After around 9 km, with only a couple to go, my left Achilles started playing up. Nothing hugely painful, but enough to be annoying. I kept going, and finished the 11 km to Mum and Dad's house.
Run details:
Duration: 1hr 09min 24sec
Distance: 11.17 km
Avg pace: 6.12 min/km
Avg speed: 9.7 kph
Weather: Fine
Mood: Happy enough to finish without much worry.

door, my Achilles, which had settled down as soon as I had stopped running earlier, became on fire. It was extremely sore, and as I haven't had any Achilles problems in my large résumé of injuries, I had no idea if it was bad to continue or not. I decided to push on. As Lance Armstrong once said, (paraphrasing) "Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever".
About a third of the way home, the pain in my ankle somewhat subsided. I was able to continue all the way home, with only a couple short walk breaks after the ginormous hill climbs along the way. Seriously, there are some huge hills between Camberwell and Nunawading. I've driven them for years, but never realised how big they were until I was running up them.
I finally made it home about 6pm, a bit slower than the first run today which was expected. My Achilles was a little sore after I finished, and walking around home afterwards it was a bit stiff. Writing this in bed now, I can feel it's not 100% comfortable, even though I am off my feet. Not painful or anything, I can just feel it's there. I shall see how it is in the morning, and will update if there is any problems with it.

Mood: Sore, but overall happy with my runs today.

Has anyone had any problems with their Achilles before? How did you overcome it? Let me know in the comments!
